Welcome to Blue Ginger Cottage and our home.
We are located in the wonderful town of Kailua on the windward side of Oahu. Enjoy your holiday at this relaxing cottage on over nearly a ½ acre of tropical gardens. And, Kailua Beach is a walk of less than 5 minutes. Kailua town is also within walking distance across the district park. Numerous shops and restaurants will appeal to a variety of tastes.
This is the ideal Bed and Breakfast home for a family with 2 – 3 children, or couples celebrating a special event. Access to the property is through teak gates into a lush garden with a hammock. Proceed to the front lanai with dining table and chairs. Enter here or walk along side of the cottage through the back gate. Right away, you will feel at ease.
Recreation opportunities are abundant. Drink your coffee while reading the morning paper at one of two lanais - one off the bedroom in the garden, the other overlooking the back yard, pool and Jacuzzi. Laze in the hammock. Swim in the lap pool or soak those tired jet lag muscles in the Jacuzzi. Feed the birds. Go way back in the yard to the gazebo and have a quiet respite for reading, doing yoga or perhaps painting with the owner who is an artist.
As your day progresses, grill lunch or dinner at the poolside lanai. Take a walk or a run in the neighborhood. It is flat and easy on the knees. End the day with a stroll on Kailua Beach and watch the kite surfers swoop in and out of the water and soar into the sky.
Most Sundays, family and friends gather on our lanai for what we call 'Bubbly Sunday' - potluck, some prosecco, and sometimes the Jacuzzi. Cottage guests are always welcome. Perhaps your holiday is a special occasion. Accommodations are possible for small family reunions, weddings or birthdays. Let us know.
Take a look at the cottage. It is bright and comfortable with 18 foot ceilings, skylights and ceiling fans. The sitting room overlooks the back yard. There is a 32” T.V. with a DVD player for family- favorite movies. This is also the sleeping area on twin beds – one a trundle ideal for smaller children. A pac and play crib is also available if needed.
The kitchenette is between the master bedroom and the sitting room. It is equipped with a full refrigerator with an ice maker, sink and spacious countertop. Cooking appliances are microwave, coffee maker, electric teapot, electric frying pan, toaster oven, rice cooker and blender. The outdoor burner on the grill is often used for sauté or creating your bar-b-que sauce. The refrigerator and cupboards have condiments often needed for home cooking; spices, vinegar/oil, peanut butter, etc. Fresh flowers, fruit, juice, breads, cereal and coffee are all part of the welcome package.
A pull down ladder accesses the loft. It is a favorite hideaway for children, young and old. The bed is double sized and a small T.V. provides entertainment. The spacious master bedroom is on the front side of the cottage. It is separated from the kitchenette with a bamboo room divider. Furnished with a queen size bed and family antiques it is another bit of a haven for that afternoon nap.

We had a fantastic time on the island of Oahu. We stayed with Susan and couldn't of asked for a better host. We had our privacy, but Susan was always ready to answer any questions and treated us like family. The unit was clean and very comfortable. I plan on returning to Oahu soon and will look to stay here again. Thank you Susan! -MARY ANN S. (Stayed: August 2016 Source: VRBO)
WONDERFUL COTTAGE, WONDERFUL HOSTS
The cottage is awesome, the pictures do not do it justice. Susan and Claude are two great hosts who went above and beyond to make sure our stay was a good one. Our stay was over Christmas and they extended an invite to their Christmas party. You are less than 3 blocks (walking) from one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. You can also walk to many shops and restaurants and majors stores (Target, Whole Foods). I highly recommend the Blue Ginger/Mele Hale! - KARI K. (Stayed: December 2015 Source: VRBO)
CAN'T WAIT TO COME BACK!
Susan and Claude are absolutely wonderful hosts! I'm an Oahu local from Waipahu who wanted a nice getaway with some friends from Washington and the Blue Ginger Cottage was perfect. The listing doesn't do this cottage justice! The property was beautiful, well-maintained, pristine, and the amenities were overflowing!
My friends and I attended their weekly event "Bubbly Sunday" and it was like being part of a family, our hanai family. I would recommend it to anyone who stays here. Susan also let us have some of our own guests over for a bbq and some swimming in the pool, which was so gracious of her.
The beach was less than a 10 minute walk away. It's a lot closer than I thought it was going to be! At the cottage, there is basically everything and anything that you may need to go to the beach. Snorkeling gear, towels, beach bags, squirt guns, floaty tubes, boogie boards, and other things that I can't even remember right now. The outside shower was great for washing off all the salt water and sand before entering back into the cottage.
The Blue Ginger Cottage was just everything that we could have wanted and needed in our stay. Thank you so much Claude and Susan for everything! I would definitely love to come back and stay here again. I'll make sure to reserve some time to have a nice painting session with Susan ;) - DEIDRE D. (Stayed: May 2015 Source: HomeAway Family)
MY HALE AWAY FROM HOME!
I spent three of my four weeks in Hawaii in this cottage in Kailua (the first was on the Big Island in a timeshare.) and had an absolutely wonderful time! It has an open, airy feeling and was just the right size for me so that I felt like I was at home in my own apartment. Having access to the pool and grill in the backyard were especially important to me, and the Jacuzzi felt fantastic after attending my weekly boot camps at a gym in Honolulu. The walk to Kailua Beach is a mere block or two away and ends up in a section that doesn't get as crowded as the beach park area further south. I could also walk (or drive) to the business district and have delicious breakfasts and the best Americano (sorry Starbucks!) at a little café called Morning Brew.
As for the landlords, Susan and Claude were delightful and so accommodating! They ventured all the way to Waikiki with me (a far distance for these settled-in town dwellers!) to attend Hawaii Five-0's Sunset on the Beach premier...what great sports! And their Bubbly Sundays, where they serve Prosecco and grilled foods to whomever of their family and friends that show up, were a lot of fun.
The only drawback was that the island was experiencing unseasonably hot, humid weather for a couple weeks because of the absence of the usual trade winds, so the apartment got hot and stuffy during the day. But the large ceiling exhaust fan and the little fans placed around the cottage helped alleviate the heat and, since I was out and about during most days anyway, it wasn't a major problem. (Maybe a strategically placed swamp cooler in the kitchen/living area would help keep it cooler.)
I would rent this cottage again without any hesitation. Mahalo, Susan and Claude, for helping to make my dream vacation in Hawaii extra special! - SUSAN from Park City, Utah (Stayed: September 2014 Source: VRBO
Susan was an absolutely energetic guest. We did venture to Waikiki with her for the premier of Hawaii Five 0. She is the ultimate fan. Three years ago our garage was used for one of the shows. She remembered it!
We appreciate her comments. She became part of the family. We strive to give our guests what ever they need. If it is joining in the activities or absolute privacy that's what we do. We hope she comes back!
THE PERFECT PLACE TO STAY
We could not have been more happy with the Blue Ginger Cottage, it absolutely made our trip. The location is perfect, only a few blocks from the heart of Kailua Town and a block off the beach. We hardly used our car during our stay because it was just so much more pleasant to walk everywhere. The actual cottage is fantastic, Susan has added a lot of small touches that makes it above and beyond most rentals. The breeze that goes throughout the rooms is lovely, we were never too hot, and it's an added bonus to listen to the tropical birds sing outside your windows in the morning. We thought the place was actually much more spacious than it appears in the photos, in the three weeks we stayed there it was the perfect size. The back lanai is lovely for morning breakfast or bbqing in the evenings and the landscaped backyard is beautiful.
The nearby beaches, Kailua and Lanikai, are honestly two of the best beaches on the island (trust me, we explored almost all of them). We felt so spoiled to be within walking distance of both.
Our favorite part of the whole stay though was the hosts, Susan and Claude. They are wonderful people that we really enjoyed getting to know. They give you plenty of privacy when needed but are available to give advice about places to eat, sightseeing on the island and any other questions you may have. We now consider them friends and can't wait to come back and stay again in the future! -KATIE from Portland, Oregon (Stayed: May 2013 Source: VRBO)
GREAT TIME AT THE GINGER COTTAGE!
We had such a great time staying at the ginger cottage. Everything you could ever need is there - towels, boogie boards, sand toys and even some breakfast food to welcome us. The kids loved playing in the pool every morning when they woke up and every day after either an adventure or a day at the beach. The beach was only two blocks away and the main town was only two blocks away. There were plenty of choices for food, whether it was coffee, dinner out or Whole Foods to purchase some food to cook or make at home. We were able to visit Pearl Harbor, the North Shore, hike KoKo crater Manoa falls and the lighthouse all an easy drive from Blue Ginger Cottage. We were also lucky enough to be there on a Sunday and were invited to join Susan and Claude for a bubbly Sunday which was a special memory for all of us. As you can see, we thoroughly enjoyed our time, the cottage as well as the Phillips! - Missy Q. (Stayed June 2016 Source: VRBO)
A GREAT EXPERIENCE
We had a wonderful stay with our three kids age 7, 11 and 14 this summer at Blue Ginger. They enjoyed the spacious garden, the pool, the jacuzzi, the hammock, and all the pool toys, as well as the bodyboards and surfboard we were allowed to take to the beach. Susan and her husband were excellent hosts, with good recommendations for our excursions.
We really enjoyed being invited to their potluck barbecue with all their Hawaiian friends. It was a wonderful experience for a Norwegian family.
The cottage was pretty, very clean, and we appreciated the basket of baking goods, fruit etc that Susan left for us on our arrival. The kids fought to sleep in the attic. We would really love to return some day. By the way - the beach and the bay was beautiful - you will not miss Waikiki for a minute! - SIRI FROM NORWAY (Stayed: July 2014 Source: VRBO)
JUST FELT LIKE HOME!
We stayed with our 2 kids and absolutely LOVED it! The pool was wonderful and the room was very comfortable. We enjoyed letting the kids run around in the HUGE yard and they enjoyed chasing and catching the geckos (the owner has toys for the kids to do this). The loft worked great for our teenager to slip away and have his own space. We hope to stay again soon! -SERRI R. (Stayed: October 2013 Source: VRBO)
PERFECT FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN
This place was perfect for our family of 4. We stay at a lot of rental properties while holidaying and it's places that have owners as managers that really are a cut above the rest. Susan was fabulous. She borrowed cribs and strollers from her friends for my children and even put a child gate at the back door. There were plenty of condiments etc in the fridge and towels were changed whenever we wanted. We were even able to use her washer and dryer and she supplied all the powder. Probably the most amazingly generous thing she did was buy us a 2nd hand booster seat and deliver it to our car rental company (at the airport) the day before we arrived. I'm sure my own brother wouldn't even do that for me!
The photos do not do this light, airy place justice. My husband was worried when I said it had no a/c but it really didn't need it as the ceilings are very high and the fans worked so well that some nights we had to turn them off because we were cold!
The master bedroom is enormous we had the baby crib and a single mattress (as my son didn't want to sleep by himself!) in there and there was still plenty of room.
THE POOL! Ahhh it was divine. Every time we left my 3 yr old would ask if we could go back to our 'little house' to go in the pool. It is literally 3 paces from your back door.
While there is no oven there were plenty of gizmos and gadgets to prepare a meal for us almost every evening (it's often hard eating out healthily with a 3yr old and 11 month old so we chose to eat in most meals).
I know I was a little nervous about being so close to someone else's house (there is a common wall) but those jitters were quickly extinguished. In our 2 week stay we 'shared' the outside area with Susan's family once, and she even asked if it was ok prior. I have very noisy children and with the time difference they were up at 5am every morning, often in the pool shortly after and Sussan never complained, she actually mentioned that they hardly heard us at all.
It really is a perfect place to stay at an excellent price. We hardly went to the beach because we couldn't tear the 3 yr old away from the pool and spa. We chose Kailua so we could feel a bit more like locals and it was a great choice.
I can not recommend this place highly enough. We hope to be back one day and our son would really like to sleep in the loft bedroom this time ;) Thank you for a fabulous stay, sorry it took me so long to write a review! - AMANDA from Sydney, Australia (Stayed: July 2012 Surce: VRBO)
We've been to Hawaii 6 times and found this property two years ago. We've stayed here twice and are going back again July 2013. First, Kailua is the gem of Oahu. It's quiet, peaceful, and the most beautiful area of the Island. Second, Susan's place, Blue Ginger, is absolutely wonderful. It's a large property with a front yard and back yard full of shady palms and tropical plants with several places to just hide away and sit and read and relax. The breeze off the ocean ruffles the palms as you are only a block and a half from the water. The pool and hot tub are great and you have your own grill to cook out.
Susan is a wonderful host and checks in occasionally to see if you need anything. My grandson (9) loves the loft with his own TV and bed. We just love this place and the hosts and highly recommend it to all! -TRACEY from Flat Rock, NC (Stayed: June 2012 Source: VRBO)
